ADJECTIVES- GENDER

ITALIAN

Italian has two genders, masculine and feminine. Like French, Portuguese, and Spanish, Italian adjectives depend on the gender of the noun modified by the adjective.

If an Italian adjective ends with "a" or "o", then it takes different endings depending on the gender. We will show the example "alto", which means "tall", for the singular nouns 'man' and 'woman'.

uomo alto - tall man
donna alta - tall woman

The ending is "o" if the noun is masculine, and "a" if the noun is feminine.

An adjective that ends with "e" is the same for both masculine and feminine.

uomo grande - great man
donna grande - great woman

The examples we showed you were adjectives for singular nouns. You are now ready for Italian adjectives that modify plural nouns.
