Miscellaneous - Negation

Perhaps it is an oversimplification, but I think of kein as negating a subject/noun, and nicht as negating an action/verb.

KEIN-

Ja. Wir haben keine Bananen. Yes. We have no bananas.

Keine Wüste bleibt. Es schmeckte gut. No desert remains. It tasted good.

Ich habe keine Geduld für ihre Lügen. I have no patience for her lies.

Ich esse keine grüne Eier und Schinken. I do not eat green eggs and ham.


NICHT-

Als er sagte, nein, er erzählte die Wahrheit nicht. (Er liebt mich.) When he said no, he did not tell the truth. (He loves me.)

Ich schwimme nicht im Fluß. I don't swim in the river.

Ich glaube nicht, daß ich je diesen Moment vergessen werde. I don't think I will ever forget this moment.
