The need for a rounded edge- Missiles are given rounded tips rather conical tips. This is to make the heat flow away from the tip of the missile, rather than to flow along it. If it becomes necessary to fly the ship horizontally through an atmosphere, this rounded shape will aid heat dissipation and make it possible for the ship to travel at a higher speed.

Luckily, the last item is no longer the high cost it used to be. The crew costs will never go away--that is a given. However, the first item, the cost of building the vessel, is a still a variable to be controlled. A simple design will take less time to manufacture, and will have a higher structural integrity. A ship must be tested regularly for material fatigue. A simple design shortens the time it takes for these tests, and of course, time is money.
