Magellan - ¿Sentimientos?
(This story is written in the present tense for the beginning
reader. Some compound structures, with both present
participles and past participles, are necessary.)
Los primates escapan hacia los árboles cada vez que nos
acercamos a menos de diez yardas de ellos. Es posible
grabarlos en vídeo desde distancias mayores. Parece que a esas
distancias mayores, aun cuando saben que estamos en las
cercanías, nos ignoran.
The primates escape to the trees whenever we come within ten
yards of them. It is possible to videotape them from distances
farther away. It appears that at these longer distances, they
know we are nearby, but they ignore us.
Estoy sorprendida de su agilidad. No soy una experta en
primates. Quizás nosotros tenemos primates en la Tierra que
pueden viajar tan rápido a través de las copas de los arboles.
Nadie podría hacerme trepar allÍ arriba y saltar así de rama
en rama. Me asustaría de que una rama pudiera romperse.
I am amazed at their agility. I am not an expert on primates.
Perhaps we have primates on Earth that can travel so quickly
through the tops of the trees. You couldn't make me climb up
there and jump like that from one branch to the next. I would
be afraid that a branch would break.
Son una especie muy afectuosa. Creo que hay unos cincuenta
individuos. Puedo reconocer cerca de la mitad de ellos. Mi
interés esta en sus interacciones sociales. Duermen en los
árboles y construyen nidos a partir de vides. Quiero decir que
ellos tejen redes, parecidas a las de una hamaca, pero no
exactamente. Necesitan ver las fotografías de algunos
ejemplos, que estoy enviando.
They are a very affectionate species. I believe there are about fifty
individuals. I can recognize about half of them. My interest is in their
social interactions. They sleep in the trees, and they weave nests out of
vines. I want to say they make nets, sort of like a hammock, but not exactly. You need to look at the photographs of examples that I am sending.
Tienen pensamientos? Me parece que tienen sentido del humor.
Una vez mas, debo disculparme por no conocer como los primates
se comportan en La Tierra. Ellos son juguetones, de modo
parecido a las ardillas, pero se trata de algo mas que uno
persiguiendo a otro.
Do they have thoughts? It appears to me that they have a sense of humor. Once again I must
apologize for not knowing how primates behave on Earth. They are playful,
sort of like squirrels, but it is more than just one chasing
another.
Un primate toma el pelo a otro. Hay una fruta naranja que es
muy jugosa. Un primate estrellará esta fruta en la cara de
otro para darle una sorpresa. Hace un revoltijo muy pegajoso,
y el primate que comete la diablura emite un chillido fuerte
en un tono agudo y entonces corre. El primate con la cara
pegajosa persigue al otro, e intenta hacerle una
zancadilla.
One primate teases another. There is an orange fruit that is
very juicy. One primate will smash this fruit in the face of
another as a surprise. It makes a very sticky mess, and the
primate that plays the prank makes a loud scream at a high
pitch and then runs. The primate with the sticky face chases
the other, and tries to trip the other primate.
Algunas veces, parece que el primer primate quiere ser
perseguido. Hay modelos sobre quién ataca a quién. En
ocasiones quiero lanzar una de esas frutas naranja a un
primate, para ver que pasa, pero me han dicho que nosotros
solo podemos observar a los primates. No podemos interactuar
con ellos en forma alguna.
There are times it seems the first primate wants to be chased. There are
patterns as to who attacks who. Sometimes I want to throw one of these
orange fruits at a primate, to see what happens, but I have been told that
we can only watch the primates. We may not interact with them in any way.
El Sol se esta poniendo ahora mismo. Hay tonos rosados, naranjas
y rojos brillando a través de las ramas oscuras de los árboles.
Veo muestras de afecto entre varios primates. De repente,
ahora, mientras escribo, me doy cuenta de algo en lo que no
habÍa pensado antes: aquÍ no hay ninguna clase de insectos que

The sun is setting right now. There is pink and orange and red
shining through the dark branches of the trees. I see
displays of affection between various primates. Suddenly now,
as I write, I realize something that I haven't thought of
before: there are no insects here of the kind I would call
bugs". There are butterflies, many butterflies with
iridescent purple and blue patterns.
Oh, no puedo ponerlo en palabras aunque lo intento.

Oh, I cannot put it into words though I try. This night feels
like magic to me. I want to write down all the details of
what makes the magic. Time changes things so soon. In fifteen
minutes it will be dark, and the magic of this night will be
my first memory."
