Encontramos vida en los dos primeros sistemas solares que
visitamos. Aperte de éste, los siguientes veintitres sistemas
solo se componen de agua y rocas. No hay nada, a menos que se
quiera contar con el poco musgo que se encontró en el sistema
solar numero trece. La verdad, es que despues de encontrar
plantas y animales complejos, queríamos encontrar vida
inteligente y no nada más que monos.
We found life in the first two solar systems we visited. After
that, the next twenty-three systems had nothing but water and
rocks. Nothing. Unless you count some moss that we found in
solar system thirteen. The truth is, after finding complex
plants and animals, we wanted to find intelligent life,
and more than just monkeys.
Sistema veintiseis. Lacaille.

Después de salir de la dilatación temporal, fuimos en
busca de planetas con vida.
After coming out of the time dilation, we looked for planets
with life.
"Mira eso!" exclamó Marisa.
"Look at that!" Marisa exclaimed.
"Parece como...."
"That looks like..."
"Es una ciudad."
"It's a city."
"Y cual era la regla más importante que nos dijeron antes de
salir en esta misión?" sonrió la capitán.
"And what was the most important rule we were told before
embarking on this mission?" the captain smiled.
"Sí, ya recuerdo...esperar lo inesperado...." sonrió
Marisa.
"Yes, I know, expect the unexpected..." Marisa smiled.
Humanoides. A una distancia suficiente para permanecer sin ser
descubiertos,la avanzada óptica de 'La Magallanes' tomó
fotografías que mostraban la presencia de humanoides allá
abajo.
Humanoids. From a distance high enough to remain unseen, the
advanced optics of the Magellan took pictures that showed
humanoids below.
"Pienso que lo mas apropiado sería esperar la aprobación del
Mando Central antes de intentar aterrizar" dijo Jennifer.
"I think it is appropriate to wait for approval from Command
Central before attempting to make a landing," Jennifer said.
Pasaron muchos días antes de que el permiso para aterrizar y
tener el contacto llegara. En ese tiempo, Marisa y Jennifer
cartografiaron el terreno del planeta. Enviaban fotos de la
maquinaria agrícola cultivando los campos, y fotografías de
las presas que retenían el agua para el riego de las cosechas
cuando llegaba la sequía. Las ciudades halladas quemaban
carbón para hacer funcionar las fábricas y ello hacía que
hubiese tanto hollín en el aire que los árboles se cubrían de
él y el paisaje parecía repugnante.
It was several days before the permission to land and make
contact arrived. During that time, Marisa and Jennifer mapped
the terrain of the planet. They sent back pictures of the farm
machinery cultivating the fields, and pictures of dams holding
back water, apparently for irrigating crops in times of
drought. They found cities burning coal to run the factories,
with so much black soot in the air that it coated the
trees and made the landscape look hideous.
Llevaron la nave hacia las montañas y encontraron a dos hombres
jóvenes que parecían tener alrededor de veinte años.
They flew the ship to a mountain, and located two young men,
who appeared to be in their early twenties.
"Marisa, qué piensas?"
"Marisa, what do you think?"
"Pienso que son lo que estamos buscando. Siento que escalan
montañas porque tienen un cierto sentido de la aventura." Ella
rió. "Cuando salieron de casa ,no tenían ni idea de lo que
iban a encontrar."
"I think they're what we're looking for. I'm assuming that they're climbing the mountain because they have a sense of adventure." She laughed. "They had no idea when they left home
what they would find."
Dejaron la nave suspendida sobre una meseta. El reflejo del sol
en la nieve produjo un resplandor muy grande. Cuando los dos
hombres llegaron a la meseta, vieron que estaba flotando en el
aire y se quedaron sorprendidos. La nave aterrizó, se abrió la
puerta y Jennifer y Marisa salieron.
They hovered the ship on a plateau. The reflection of the sun
on the snow gave a bright white glare. When the men reached
the plateau they saw the ship hovering in the air, and they
stopped to stare. The ship landed, the door opened, and
Jennifer and Marisa stepped out.
